Its generally not a big issue but for those of you like me who are still toting around their handy dandy iPhone 3GS, you may have noticed that the new operating system although in many ways rocks has made your phone feel slow and slugging at times. I decided to put together a few tips on how to speed up and prevent the phone from “bogging down”. Lord knows I despise a sluggish keyboard, I doubt anyone else does either! The most important part aside is keeping your phone and apps up to date. Doesn’t seem like a big deal but most of the time updates are bug fixes and sometimes that’s what is slowing you down. Aside from that, because I’m sure we all keep everything up to date (LOL), App management is vital. You have to bear in mind that the 3gs has 256 megs of RAM. This was a TON of RAM say 10 years ago. That said, it stands to reason the few Apps we have open the less RAM is used, the faster our phone can go. (A bit generalized but you get the picture) So if you’re not sure how to close Apps, I’ll tell you how.
1) Double-Click your home button
2) Click and hold an App in the little menu that comes up about 3 seconds the Apps begin to shake and you see a minus sign at the corner of the app (Same as if you were going to delete them)
3) Click the minus sign on all Apps that you are not using at the time
4) Click the home key to return to “normal” mode
This alone may not sully resolve the issue. Turning off location services for apps that really don’t need it on all the time can really help performance because it limits the number of apps that are “fetching data”.
Here is how you do this:
1) Click Settings
2) Click location services
3) Turn location services off altogether or look through the list and turn off the apps that really don’t need it
4) Click the home button and you are done!
I’m going to leave you with these 2 suggestions, there are other ways but these are the easiest and probably most effective, not to mention, doing both can and will increase battery life which in my opinion is a pretty sweet side effect!
I hope someone finds this helpful. I’m sure some find it common sense, but its directed to the less “tech savvy”. In either event, you are reading this comment or like this to let me know if its helpful, stupid, or you don’t feel strongly either way. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time
